Ronald's B-17 Mission

City of God

Narrative Role and Significance

The mission is narrated by Ronald's brother, who admits he does not know when or exactly how the bailout was ordered, a confession that marks the limits of his knowledge and the fragmentary nature of war memory. The raid is a set piece of catastrophic failure: the strategic target, the inadequate fighter escort, the storm, the blind descent, the beating, and finally the rescue. It is also a study in reversal, as the man who imputed triumph to his plane is brought low, and the man beaten by peasants is saved by a peasant. The event establishes Ronald as a survivor of profound ordeal, and it threads the novel's larger concerns with the arbitrariness of fate, the violence of war, and the unexpected kindness that can follow it.
